And recruitment an I'm joined by Derek Kelly, Derek and introduced himself. Hi everyone, I'm Derek Kelly. I'm the director of international programs here welcome and thanks for joining us so we are so excited to have you all here with us today? Let's stir start with an overview of what we're going to cover in the web and R and let's set some ground rules so that everyone knows how the flow of the web and R is going to go. We're 1st going to start by talking about us. College of Dentistry, moving on to the programs for international dentists. We will cover the curriculum of our programs.
How to apply tuition visa info and then at the end we will give you plenty of time to ask any questions. Alright so during this web and are you will only be able to hear us your microphones are muted. But if you have any questions. You can feel free to type in the chat, which you should find on your left hand side you can type any questions throughout the web and R or at the end and we will get to those questions at the very end so moving right along. Let's give you an overview 1st about NYU College of Dentistry.
You all probably have heard about NYU NYU was founded in 1832 and the College of Dentistry was founded in 1865. It is the largest dental school in the United States, one in 10. Dentists are and why you train so if you're in the US. There's a high chance that your meeting in NYU dentistry alumni. If you're seeing the dentist here were ranked Top 15 dental school in the world by the QS rankings. Our mission is advancing dentistry transforming lives.
A little bit more about the College of Dentistry in the various programs that are offered here at the college. There is a DDS program that is a four year program for Americans. And there's also an advanced standing program, which is 2, 1/2 years for foreign trained dentists. There is a dental hygiene program. There are various advanced education programs, which are also called postgraduate specialties in for instance, Ortho Apparao. Probs oral surgery. There are also some Masters degrees, which are non clinical.
There are few specialties in Masters degrees, such as clinical research biomaterials, an oral biology. Finally, the last in the list is our programs, which we will get to programs for international dentists, which are clinical programs so if you're interested in any of these 4 categories. Other than our programs such as DDS dental hygiene postgraduate. We don't specifically cover those in this office, but I'd encourage you to learn more by.
Visiting the website or sending an email to the email address that you see on the screen. Dental.admissions@nyu.edu so in our pro in our webinar today. We are specifically going to cover the programs for international dentists will give you an overview about eligibility an if this program is the right fit for you alright so our program started in the 1980s. In the very beginning in 1985, there were 2 programs periodontics and orthodontics.
And in 1992 are implant program began today. We have almost 1500 alumni from all around the world. In 95 countries. We have a huge alumni network, we're going to talk to you, a little bit more about the specialties that are offered today. So you can see List 5 programs that are offered today that we are accepting applications for for 2020. I'm going to go through them 1 by one and explain what the program covers starting with comprehensive this program is mostly restorative an it covers the full phase of Dentistry.
An so it can do anything other than Ortho P to an implant placement, but they do a lot of restorative an prosthodontic work in the comprehensive program. They also do a little bit of Endo, a little bit of oral surgery a little bit of Perio. They cover the fundamentals of everything needed to prepare you to go into private practice as a general dentist with a focus on restorative empros. UM this program can be good preparation. If you are looking to advance your education by going into.
Aesthetics or implants or postgraduate or DDS on this really is a very well, rounded program covering mostly restorative now next one on the list. We have the aesthetic dentistry program. This is a one year program, mostly focusing on smile design. It is an interdisciplinary program, which means that it will combine aspects of different specialties in Dentistry, such as probs such as Perry. Oh, such as Ortho and learning how these disciplines work together to execute.
A treatment plan that you design so aesthetics is focusing on smile design. It's focusing not just on veneers. They can do for instance, full mouth rehabilitation. There's also an emphasis on emotional Dentistry, an using photography to work with your patients and 2.
Basically to have them feel invested in you know, achieving that smile that they want an improving their confidence. Improving essentially their quality of life so aesthetics is really smoke is focusing on smile design an implant. Dentistry is a 2 year program covering both restorative an surgical aspects of implants alright so you not only learn to do the implant placement, but it's also important to know that restorative aspect for those who are going into.
Private practice you won't just be doing surgeries. You also need to take care of your patient in a holistic way by knowing how to restore implants when complications occur so this program is 2 years and it also has a heavy emphasis on research.
Next moving on we have a one year or so oral surgery program. This program does focus mainly on extractions and they do get some exposure to more advanced surgical techniques. They also can do some implants in the program so this one year program. I would say is very rigorous, UM in oral surgery training and it also has an emphasis on oral Medison. So you may be learning to deal with medically complex patients and you have to really know about their medical history.
And that informs the way that you work with these patients so oral surgery. An also um emphasis on oral Medison. Finally, there is a 3 year oral surgery program, which is also accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, so for this program will talk a little bit more about the exams later but it is preparing candidates for the FD exam. Alright so if that is something that is interesting to you. That is something that is recognized in your country. This program might be interesting for you.
So if you have more specific questions about the programs. We can talk about it in more detail an now from now. We're going to talk a little bit more detail about the curriculum an what the day-to-day life of a student would look like in these programs just a little bit of background so that you know, these are full-time hands on clinical training programs alright. They are meant for foreign trained dentist. They're designed for international dentists, but they're also open to American trained dentists.
So, in case you do have a DDS in the US you are still eligible to apply.
These are certificate programs alright so they are non degree. You would not receive a degree at the end. You would receive a certificate that's important to note an it's also very important to note that these programs do not provide licensure to practice in the USA. If you are interested in getting licensed you probably want to check out the DDS or maybe post graduate programs. These programs do not lead to licensure, so let's talk a little bit more about.
The full time nature of the program and the curriculum so in these programs, UM pretty much you can expect to be at the school. This is a picture of our school. You can expect to be here 5 days a week. Sometimes, 6 days, 6 days a week, depending on the program, depending on what other projects or assignments. You have going on, but pretty much it's Monday to Friday. Full time schedules. You can be here as early as usually 8:00 or 9:00 AM. There's one program that has days that begin at 7:00 AM.
That's oral surgery, the very latest that you would be in school would be 10:00 AM and that would be like an easier day, but expect to have a full time Day starting at 8 or 9 going until sometimes 5:00 or 6:00 PM on average. And you may have some evening clinics. Those can go until 8:00 PM. I know implants and oral surgery haven't evening clinic. I know in the aesthetics program there working a lot of evening hours in the lab doing wax apps for their patients. So yes when you're in this program expect to be have full days.
From Monday to Friday and there are some days on the weekends. I know that some of our oral surgery. Students may go in on Saturday. Once in awhile to do emergency cases an implants also sometimes works on the weekends to do research so expect basically your full schedule to be consumed with this kind of program usually people are not working well in the program and that is important to note For your personal planning alright so let's talk a little bit.
More about the hands on aspect in this program. You might be wondering will I get to see patients and the answer? Is yes, you will get to see patients. An lots of them. Most of these programs, we could say about 70% of the time is spent in the clinic and you as the students are the one are the individual treating patients alright. This is not a program where you are assisting or observing you as you are acting as the provider, usually you are partnered with another student.
As you can see in the picture. There are 2 students doing surgery. One is probably the one doing performing surgery and the other is assisting so usually you are working with a partner in assisting them while you operate or treat the patient and vice versa. But in almost all cases I mean, this is not you observing this is not faculty doing cases for you. You are really the provider, working with your patients being empowered an learning these new skills while in the program.
So hands on clinical is a huge benefit at a unique advantage of being in this type of program. As for the other 30% of the program. The breakdown is really didactic and research. Most of it being didactic what we mean by that are lectures and hands-on courses when you're not seeing patients so you will have various lectures from various faculty in various specialties. An you will also have some hands-on courses most likely.
For instance, in comprehensive aesthetics and probably implants as well are all doing certain courses in the lab. There's a fixed bras in the simulation lab. There are some courses in the bench lab as well. So it's not the majority of the time it's about 30% of the time in the program is doing didactic that can be hands on that can be in the simulation lab in the bench lab and sometimes we also have vendors of different dental products.
And we do, hands-on courses learning how to use their products, especially in the implant and oral surgery program. As for research. All of our students are encouraged to get involved, and to do some kind of research project.
At the minimum and we try to make that easy an accessible for you. The college every year in the spring holds an annual Research Expo Day, where students from all programs whether it's TDs postgraduate or international are encouraged to submit a poster a poster or a case study of some sort you know, so when you're in the program. We encourage you to identify a faculty to mentor you while in the program and to work with you on your research project.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved, and do some sort of research. It's also a great boost for your resume and it's great experience for you to have under your belt, so research is highly encouraged. It's not mandatory except and implants. But for the other programs that is optional, but it is something that we really encourage that you take advantage of the resources at NYU and working with the faculty on a research project finally let's talk a little bit about the.
New York City experience when you're at NYU you will have access to so many different cultural activities and events. You know aside from being in the program, which is super diverse and having a very diverse classmates. You will also get to experience New York City and why you is a school that is in and of the city. We pride ourselves. On being sort of among New York's we're on the cultural scene and our students are really. I think it a lot of exposure to doing different events going to museums going to.
Broadway shows trying all different types of new cuisine. You have access to a lot in New York and I'm saying that as an NYU alumni. It's a really super unique place to study and unique place to learn.
It's not like being in and say a college town. Uhm you know in a suburban area. You have access really to so much culture and so much diversity in New York City, so that's a huge part of the NYU experience when you're not in the clinic when you're not seeing patients that little bit of down time that you have our students are out there really experiencing the world through New York City. So I think it's a super unique place to study and that's a super huge benefit of being NYU is being able to experience New York City.
Alright so moving on now let's get to the nitty gritty and talk about a little bit more of the details about how to apply an eligibility alright so will start off with these 2 programs comprehensive an oral surgery do not require prior work experience so if you are about to graduate from dental school say next summer. You can be eligible to apply even if you have one or 2 years of work experience. You can also be in the right range of experience to apply to one of these programs.
Um there are the other 3 programs. Alright aesthetics implants and the three year oil surgery program require a little bit more work experience so if you're looking forward.
It's about if you're looking forward to the future or if you already have this amount of work experience aesthetics requires at least 2 years implants at least 3 years, oral surgery. At least 2 years of full-time clinical work experience after graduation, Alright so for these 3 programs. If you meet that criteria by next. June then you can apply now. If you're still in dental school. Maybe you're looking forward in the next 2 or 3 years to apply.
And I'd also like to mention for some for someone who might want to start one of these programs and doesn't have say 3 years of experience for implants. You can actually start with one of our one year programs comprehensive or oral surgery. At one year of experience in either comprehensive oral surgery can count in place of the work experience requirements for aesthetics or implants or the 3 year oral surgery. So we've had several students through that pathway.
Where they might start with one year of comprehensive and then enter implants or they might start with one year of oral surgery and then enter ascetics or implants because when you're in one of those programs you would see so many patients that it would make up for that many years of experience in private practice because our programs are rigorous and you see a lot of patients in our programs?
So now moving on for how to apply you're probably wondering what documents I need. We're going to go through all of them personal statements. This is the most basic and most important maybe one of the more important documents were going to talk more about through some tips on how to make a great personal statement that's about 1 to 2 pages, explaining your interest in the program letters of recommendation. There should be at least 1. I'd recommend 2 or 3 if you're able to get 2 or 3 letters of recommendation.
Transcript and Diploma in English. Let's go through those 2 terms in case there are you're not familiar with them. Transcript is a document that shows the classes that you've taken an the marks that you received the diploma is the document, which shows basically that you've graduated the name of the degree and date of degree conferral.
All right now for the next one. ECE course by course evaluation. This might be something new to you course by course evaluation is something that almost any school that you apply to in the USA will require this OK. This is an evaluation of your transcript and diploma.
And it basically verifies the equivalency of your degree in the USA and it also takes your grades. An credit hours and scales them to the American grading system so that when our admissions committee. An faculty review. The ECE Course by course evaluation. They can understand your grades an evaluate them fairly because we have students coming from so many different countries with so many different grading scales. It's hard for us to know.
It's hard for us to understand if you did, well, or if you didn't do well. The evaluation helps us understand your grades and your degree equivalency. This one can take a little bit of time. So I encourage you to give yourself 2 or 3 months to work on it, you can go to www.ac.org to learn more about how to request that with your transcript and diploma next. We have the tofu and I'll score these are to demonstrate your English.
Proficiency if you're interested in a waiver. If you think that you qualify for a waiver, um send us an email. We do provide waivers on a case by case basis.
Finally, the last step is the application fee that is something that you can pay on line by credit card alright so if you do have any questions throughout this application process. Feel free to email us will send will post our email address at the end, so you have it, but we are definitely available to help if questions come up with these different documents now moving on, you're probably wondering if we require exams. I'm happy to tell you we do not require an BDE exams for before programs that you see listed.
Comprehensive aesthetics implants and the one year oil surgery do not require any NBDAE exams. If you're interested in the 3 year oral surgery that does require an exam, either the MF D1 or both. NBD one and 2. Those are required for entry to the program, while in that program, you will continue on to take the MF D2 and finally at the end of the program. You would be prepared for the FFT exam so those exams are actually required.
And for that reason because they are leading up to further certifications. If you do have questions about that. The MFDRNBD, One and 2. We can talk more about it at the end or you can send us an email.
A little bit more about next steps, so once you've submitted your application, which we encourage you to do by January. That's the priority deadline, the next step would be an interview an that's something that we will arrange with you, we would send you an email to arrange an interview and you're welcome to do it, either in person. If you're able to come to New York or we can do it by Skype were happy to accommodate you if you're not in the country. Uhm it is a really nice thing. If you can come in person if you're able to, if you have that access.
And you can spend the day visiting us as part of your interview day and observing first hand in the clinics. But if New York is a little bit too far for you. That's fine and we can certainly do your interview by Skype. The program start date is July 1st, 2020 and we begin with orientation right away will talk a little bit more in detail about start date.
Before we get to that. Let's talk about let's talk through some tips for a strong application. I work with a lot of applicants. I've seen a lot of applications an I want to give you some insight or advice on what's going to make your application a little bit stronger, personal statement. I cannot say this enough, but it is a super super important documents do not overlook it. Please put a lot of focus into your personal statement make sure to proofread it what the committee is looking for.
And we really want you to clearly state your goals clearly state tell us why an why you? Why did you select NYU? We want to know that you've done the research about NYU? We want to know that this is the school is the right choice on the right fit for you so when I read personal statements. I can usually tell when it's a little bit copy and paste. You could be sending the same personal statement to every school for me? What really makes a personal statement pop is when I see that.
Someone has done the research about NYU and explains why they chose us why this fits in with your career goals. I think that's something that can help your personal statement. A lot clearly state your goals proofread it. I mean when we see grammatical errors. It really it really doesn't reflect Super Well, you know proofread. It maybe have a friend proofread it. You know when I'm doing writing an I'm need to proofread. I kind of need to put it down for maybe a day and look back at it the next day.
You may not see a grammatical error. That's right in front of you because you've been looking at the document so long, so put a lot of care and attention. Take your time with it don't rush it an be very clear about your intentions. As for letters of recommendation make sure that it's not a personal letter of recommendation. Maybe it's maybe working with a relative that's we see the same last name. We know what's your parents or your answer uncle. I'd recommend try to keep it to a faculty.
Or I work supervisor someone who has seen you come in a professional setting and his over senior work either in the academic or professional setting so no personal references try to keep that professional finally we do have some tips about professionalism in communication.
First impressions are super important specially in the USA. So when we're reading your emails when we're speaking with you on the Phone or meeting you at your interviews. Um we want to see a professional candidate an you know, some of the things that I've seen and maybe Derek can chime in as well. Um things that don't reflect super well on applicants might be poorly written emails that don't have a proper salutation, um, sometimes I see that they're just one line.
An and you know when you're sitting to write an email. It's great to have proper you know to write it professionally. So you want to write dear and why you are dear office for international programs. You know state your question and then say sincerely best regards. I think it's nice to have some manners as well, and say thank you for your for your help. Um that professionalism like it's Yes, a little bit extra effort, but it really does go along way uhm.
In terms of setting up meetings. It's really good to email in advance and say, I want to visit can I set up a meeting sometimes it is difficult when someone stops by to visit and we just don't have you know time on our schedule. If we have other meetings. So it's really helpful for you and for us to schedule a meeting with us do you have anything to add 2 things one these are really good tips for corresponding with any admissions office not just ours.
And then the other thing is make sure that you do your research prior to getting in touch with the University. Whichever one that is. That means go to the website make sure that your question isn't answered in their FAQ or other materials when we get an email from someone who just says tell me about the international programs that shows us that you haven't really committed the effort to look into us and it puts a lot of work on our shoulders.
Hum and reflects a little bit of a lack of professionalism. So we ask that you do a little bit of the research first so that you can ask us. The questions that really need answering that we can give you a full robust answer, too, so keep that in mind, while when you're corresponding and when Samantha also mentioned being in touch prior to coming to visit say it. The earlier you can tell us the better, even if you're let's say you're in New York for 3 days and you tell us on that first day. Hey, I'm in New York and I come in on Saturday.
We're not open on Saturday or maybe you want to come in on that Monday and the program director isn't there, so, give us as much advance time on an appointment. Blake that the more advanced time you give us the better. Thank you. Derek so yeah, these are really some tips to help you guys as you're navigating applying for schools in the US. Uhm you know, there might be cultural differences and you might not always get that but professionalism.
That's something that we, we I think encounter a lot of common errors. So we're trying to give you some tips to help you make a great impression as your meeting the Admissions Committee faculty etc. And just one last thing I'm all with all this in mind do reach out to us. Please be in contact if you have questions. We are so happy to help you whether that's on the Phone or via email. We really do want to make the process is clear to you as possible and we want to make sure that when you're looking at NYU that you make the right choice for you.
And that we can assuage any doubts.
Thank you. Derek so um. These are tips were going to talk a little bit more nitty gritty details. A man we're going to make sure to keep plenty of time at the end for your questions now onto tuition on funding an wanted to include this slide because it's super important for each and everyone of you to do financial planning an be prepared. The tuition this year is about 97,500 OK, so that includes health insurance measurements dollars.
That includes health insurance instruments and textbooks. If you're projecting next years tuition. Make sure that uhm calculate a 3 to 5% increase. As for funding. It's really important for all of you to plan around this information scholarships and financial aid are not available. Unfortunately, because these programs are international scholarships and financial aid in the usr usually reserved for you S citizens and permanent residents and 4 degree bearing programs.
Alright so if you are you S listen. You might be wondering about loans. There are some very limited private loans available. You may apply for them. We have financial aid counselors who can talk to you about it, but just be prepared that you will need a strong credit score or a cosigner with a strong credit score. And that private loan. If you do qualify would only cover cost of tuition an not cost of living so uhm. I say this because funding.
Financial planning is each and everyone of you must must take that seriously and must plan in advance. Um finally I'll mention that we've had some students get scholarships from their home countries that something worth looking into if your government or your employer would offer some kind of scholarship. Uhm maybe loans as well. You can also look into banks in your home country. I think we may have had a few students get loans from banks in their country so financial planning for everyone.
Please do it in advance. I think it's really important for you to know if you are able to afford this before you commit to it. We don't want you to start and find yourself in a difficult position so financial planning super important and then once you're admitted what's that going to look like. Let's go over a few details if you're AUS citizen or permanent resident. You can kind of tune out you don't have to apply for a visa. But if you are in an international student.
You would start by applying for the F1 Visa, the first step is the I-20 application and you can only start that after you deposit UM. I Tony process. We will walk you through it. We have an office at NYU dedicated to immigration that is called the office of Global Services. Oh, GS alright so once you deposit you will get access to your NYU account.
As well as the I-20 application, there are some steps involved be prepared. You will need to prepare some financial documents showing that you're able to afford the cost of the tuition and cost of living for that. One year program so there are some requirements around that financial document. It should be. You know in English. It should be recent within the past 6 months and a whole bunch of other things that we will send you all that info. When we're ready for it. Um you would also need to do a visa interview at USA Embassy or consulate in your country.
Um so there's a lot of steps with that the F1 processing. Time is what we what I hear is that it's taking longer. It's getting a little bit more rigorous so I think it would yes directs that you allow 3 to 4 months for F1 visa processing. Ideally, this is another push to apply early and do your F1 visa application early to avoid any delays that might come up because what we're hearing is that there are more and more delays lately with the US embassies and consulates that are processing visas.
So we don't need to be rushing. Please do apply early and you can have plenty of time for your F1 Visa and just just so you all know uh. We do have very good success with our students getting visas. Most people should not be concerned about the actual receipt of the visa. It's just that the process can take a while. We work very closely with Yuan Weather Office of Global Services to make sure that you have the strongest application possible so I know that the visa process can be a little daunting for some people but it.
We do have a good success rate yes and we're here to help you with that. Finally, in terms of moving to New York. The program starts July 1st for those who are on an F1. You are allowed to enter the country up to 30 days in advance and we recommend arriving early 2 to 3 weeks early, um that's going to help you give you plenty of time to learn how to navigate NYC especially the subways and I think most importantly is the apartment search. You know when you begin the program. You don't want to be stressed out and distracted with that.
You want to get here early and give yourself time to find an apartment because you will have to go see them in person. You will need to buy furniture, you will need to do a lot of things, so this is our sincerest advice to you arrive early give yourself plenty of time to adjust to New York and find a place to stay and we also do provide a lot of help with that. We have a housing group that connects you with students who might be leaving behind their apartment or their furniture. An we have a whole list of resources to help you with that because we know.
The apartment search can be very daunting in New York City.
Alright so um moving on for those who might not be quite ready to apply for the programs. Maybe you're still in dental school I want to tell you guys a little bit about our summer practicum program, which is designed specifically for international dental students who have finished at least 3 years in their dental program. This is a very unique two week program that allows you to experience an why you and learn about NYU as a dental student who is considering options for after graduation.
This program let's you do hands on some hands-on courses such as we did some suture practicing some fixed prize. There are lectures from various faculty. There are some social events that we hold like we did a Broadway show this past year of visit to the Statue of Liberty. So it's a two week program that is both mostly academic, but there's also some fun activities involved an it's really a great opportunity for you to learn about.
What options do you have at NYU after graduation whether you're considering an international program or post graduate or a DDS program? You can learn all about it in this program because you're visiting observing in those various clinics. You're getting to interact with our students in our alumni who are here at NYU you're going to learn about how to apply? What are the tips like insider tips from our students from our staff from our faculty uhm so if you're thinking ahead.
And if you're still in dental school you are eligible for this two week program. It's super unique. There's no there are very few other programs like it out there in the US an it's basically a good summer camp for dental dental students. It's a lot of fun. You learn a lot. You make friends with people all around the world and I highly encourage you guys to think about it if you are still in dental school. An you got to meet us you get to spend 2 weeks with us and you also get this one 2 weeks in New York City, but it's a really great option for those of you who are.
Trying to learn about you know you might not know what specialty you want to pursue and you want to learn about that or you might not understand how dental education is in the USA. But you can get that insight when you come here for the summer practicum, so for those who are interested. We going to talk more about it or you can send us an email. We are now accepting applications for 2020 and the dates of the program are July 27th through August 7th 2020 just quickly. We also offer housing in the NYU dorms for this program so.
It takes a little bit of the pressure off of finding a hotel or Airbnb for that. Two week period. It allows you to really live life as an NYU student. Yes, it's a great eye into NYU student experience alright so.
Follow us on social media uhm. This is actually a great way to see a day in the life of a student our students and faculty are posting pictures uhm. We also have some pictures from the summer practicum. If you want to take a look back at our main account so NYU dentistry. Dot International is our main Instagram account and each of these programs have their own accounts. An we also have Facebook so I encourage you to learn more about us. Maybe catch our stories and see some some off time of students and faculty being silly outside of the clinic.
An follow some of the events some of the research. Some of the conference is that our students are attending an encourage you guys to look at our social media. It's fun. I like to follow. It even myself. It just gives you so I think a theme that you may be here throughout this annual here in a little video that were playing later is that we really feel like this program is a family there's a uh.
Amazing opportunity to join a group of about 50 to 60 students every year in the largest dental College in North America. So you get that large school field. But in a small family group environment and I think that some of the social media reflects that if you're interested. We also are really proud of our global alumni network, which is really like an extended family of our alumni who are graduated in our living all around the world doing amazing things.
Whether it's speaking at dental conferences, maybe they're teaching. Maybe they're Deans. Why you don't speak for me? Is the beginning of my professional changed my life I wouldn't NYU international programs. This amazing learning experience and you're just going to have the time of your life.
Annoy Dentistry is a life changing NYU Dentistry International program is a home. I think in Wildwood. Industries computing to college because of the location microcosmic representation.
Is family passion at work all the people that gathered here? We're from different backgrounds were from different nationality you become friends and you become family, yeah, sometimes uh actually more than what you would expect.
NYU Dentistry is inspired NYU dentistry is one of the best memory in my life and I like someone can do it, then don't think about it. I don't think there's any way that you have so many people coming from so many different places. Everybody once in their life and why you dentistry is home.
One of my favorite videos. I always love to watch that one. So now thanks for everyone who sat through the our presentation. We want to open it up for questions for those who might have any questions, you can type it into the chat box.
Oh, I see we've already gotten a few um let's take a look he uhm.
So I'm seeing a question about um.
Let's differentiate between Postgrad, an international programs. I think that's a very common question. It comes up a lot and that's very important to know the difference postgraduate programs are degree programs in the US OK and they lead to a certification that can be in periodontics prosthodontics anderdon ticks. Uhm can be in orthodontics alright so those are designed for American dentists, but
International dentists can apply as well for postgraduate programs. They're more competitive because you are competing with American train dentist. They're usually at least 3 years long, with the exception of the Endo program is only 2 years and they do require exams. They probably require your part one and Part 2 an oven NBD and they lead to a certification at the end, so they may lead to licensure. The postgraduate programs do not lead to licensure.
Or certification in the US because they're certificate programs so that's very important to note. If you are going for postgraduate programmes first of all we'd recommend starting with one of our international programs. Many of our students are preparing for postgraduate education. But if your intention is to go back home to your country an if you have not taken the national boards. The international programs are probably a better fit for you, um, if your intention is to go back to your country.
So postgrad it's more intense more you know the application process is more of a much more competitive, but also your goals. I mean, I think are going to determine which program that you should be applying for an if you are ultimately applying for post grad as a foreign train dentist. We'd recommend starting with one of our one year programs. Comprehensive is usually good preparation for prosthodontics can also we've had students go on to post graduates in ended Onyx and periodontics.
Um oral surgery can also prepare you for a period. Onyx um implants can prepare you for periodontics or prosthodontics as well as aesthetics can prepare you for either one. We've had many students do our programs to prepare them for postgraduate programs because that clinical experience in the US will basically put you on an equal footing with American trained dentists so that's a really important question to how do you differentiate an for those who are thinking about both options think about what your long term goals are?
That might help you select which program.
We're looking through some other questions answered one quickly. If someone had a question about housing uh. We don't have official dorms provided for the full-time programs in most of our students. Find apartments in the New York City sort of general housing market that said, we've had a couple students get a dorm through the NYU law school. We've created a little bit of a closer relationship with them. They're located down by Washington Square Park, which isn't very convenient commute.
And so that's something that we can work with you with to see if there's availability there. It's not guaranteed housing, but it's something that has worked in the past.
OK, so I'm saying good question about. I'm in my last year of dental school. This might apply to some others. How do I apply while my documents are pending. We've definitely had that before UM pretty common those who are in their final year of dental school UMD in place of the diploma. Uhm you should still send your transcript, which shows your coursework up until you know this semester in place of the diploma you can submit some kind of document from your school.
That states you are anticipated graduation date that can be a provisional diploma. It can be a letter from your school explaining when you know your expected graduation date is you can give that to us in place of the diploma alright so it's sort of a conditional acceptance that can be offered for someone who is graduation is pending and then after you graduate then you would give us a copy of the diploma afterwards ideally by July 1st if your degree is conferred by the end of June. We know it can take a little bit of time.
Um for the school to issue that but as long as we have some document from your school showing that your anticipated graduation is at the latest June 30th that would be acceptable. So when I ask about getting financial help from their home countries. We certainly have had students get loans in their home countries. Unfortunately Samantha and I do not know a lot about. That process and can't speak to it directly because every country is very different.
Um we encourage you to look at those funding options. Uh the issue that a lot of our students come up against is that other countries are not as familiar with giving loans for educational purposes. But it is something that has happened in the past, it's possible that something that we
I guess I don't have a lot of expertise in so it would be up to you. I guess to work on it with your bank or lender, but please also note that those who are seeking that F1 Visa. Like I mentioned earlier. You do need to show financial documents that show that you uhm demonstrate that you have financial capacity to cover the tuition and cost of living OK and that should be in liquid assets OK, so that means. No stocks are investments an in terms of loans, you may need some documentation that proves that you.
Um received it or will restore are guaranteed for that or approved for that there should be some kind of document from the bank when you're applying for the 20 you should demonstrate that you have access to that Alright Um. As for I. I see a question here about the acceptance rate. I'm good question uhm.
I'm trying to it's a little bit different for every program if my memory serves me I think it's about 50% for the implant program that can change a bit every year that's why I'm saying from last year I think it's about a 50% acceptance rate if you want me to double check that certainly please email me an I can look back at my numbers 'cause I don't remember totaly offhand.
Um someone's asking about uh getting into postgraduate programmes immediately after the international program, um with the NYU programs for the most part. There is a sort of Seamless move from international into a post following post graduate program that said there are other universities that have different start dates. We work with you in that situation. They we know that sometimes you might have to leave.
A few weeks early or something and the program directors are aware of that and they can work with uh with the student 2? What do what we call remediation so maybe a couple extra assignments or work over the spring break to make sure that you meet all the requirements to get the certificate so for the most part. It's it's not an issue. If you get into a program that says starts in January, which some advanced DDS programs start in January. That's a different story. That's
A little too early and so we have had students who have withdrawn at the end of December in order to start their advanced. DDS program and in that case. We can't offer the certificate. But for the most part like I said there is a seamless transition. Yeah, I think for postgraduate programs. I believe most of them begin July 1st throughout the country that shouldn't be an issue with the DDS. Those tend to get a little bit more complicated because they do have varying start dates.
But like Derek said we would work with you on that, um looking at the next one extracurricular activities. Do we look at those 4 potential students definitely definitely include that in your resume. We want to hear about what you're doing could be volunteering. It could be something related to the health and medical field. If there are leadership activities that you've been involved in I think definitely include that maybe talk about that in your personal statement or resume. We like to see that you're involved right so I think it's good if you've done some kind of volunteering.
The outreach any kind of leadership leadership experience that you've done as an extracurricular activity. I would say definitely incur include that and also because we are a family, you know, we're looking for a personality matches as well as an academic match. And so we want to know who you are, and get to get a good sense of you as a person. So, including all that stuff is great and let's us have a better feel of how you would mesh into our family here.
Sing another question about the requirements, you don't have to submit them all at one time. Uhm what you can do is you could submit your application. While some requirements are pending. I know the EC can take longer. Maybe the tofel you're waiting on that what you can do is submit the application now an you can log back in later to the self service portal an upload those missing requirements. Another time uhm. We track that and we would send you. You know usual reminders about what you're missing, but that's fine. It's pretty common for the for some people to submit.
Requirements are pending and someone just asked a question related to the community outreach, etc. Extracurriculars any of it is helpful an interesting to us so please include any sort of volunteering activities that you do alright. I'm seeing a question about the postgraduate oral surgery. An NYU dentistry has a 4 year. Anna 6 year track. They're only available to American train dentist Unfortunately.
So you will need to complete a DDS in the USA in order to do those one of those postgraduate oral surgery programs. Many many schools are like that in the USU maybe have a few exceptions, but in order to do that. You do need your DS an license to practice because it is based in hospital. So you do need to have a dental license already for that program an senior question about work experience if you have a postgraduate degree if you've done a clinical program after graduation.
That can count towards your clinical experience, um if you've been seeing patients, even if it's through a Masters or postgraduate equivalent type of program in your country that counts for us as clinical experience.
Uh we have a question here about someone who's studied in English throughout most of their academic karere, a man. The Toefl exam. Yes, we can wait or sorry you are not necessarily required to take the Toefl test. If you've studied in English. If you can send us a letter that your education was in English or during the interview. You demonstrate that your English is fluent. We could waive the Toefl exam requirement, but that's not a case by case basis, so please.
Make sure to mention that in the application process. I'm seeing a question about our schedule about the academic school year so in dental schools at least here at NYU. It goes throughout the entire year. So we start July 1st and ends on June 30th. There are a couple of breaks scheduled throughout the year so for most programs. It's 2 weeks of- in August 2 weeks of- in December and then one week of- in March. So total there are 5 weeks off throughout that one.
That one full year, um other you know other disciplines in the US usually follow from September through May. Dentistry is different because we are treating patients right so there must be continuity of care so the academic schedule is not like I mean, other schools in the US or other other disciplines. Yeah, the federal Holidays like Thanksgiving or a couple of long weekends. There sort of like bank Holidays.
I am seeing a question about research will I get the opportunity to publish uhm that really depends. I mean, you can you can definitely go for it? It depends I think? How long you're going to be in the program in a one year program it. Maybe it might be a limited amount of time, definitely in our two year implant program. Everyone is required to get published at least once and they are able to conduct more research because it's across a 2 year period in a one year period if you're in comprehensive oral surgery.
It's not impossible, I think that you need to keep working on it. After the one year. You need to keep working on it with the faculty, especially so you may need to plan to extend that research beyond the one year. Um some of our students. You know submit posters after they graduate. They collected the data during that one year and they kept working on it. After so it's not possible. It's possible. I would say it's it's mostly guaranteed and implants in the other programs. You want to plan ahead talk to your faculty.
From the beginning of the year that you want to get published and they will work with you on it, and see if it's possible yeah, and part of what will determine whether or not you can publish is the scope of the research question, um. Some are just by their very nature, going to take a couple of years, rather than one anothers. You can absolutely do in one year. But we do have faculty that are willing to work with you and to continue with that research even after you graduate so.
I'm gonna take the final question before you rap it up because it's about 10:00 o'clock now, so regarding um. If we do, if you do a DDS from NYU an so basically if you're in one of our programs. You're able to practice on patients because you're only working within the University not within the hospital. Those programs that are hospital based like the oral surgery for Year and 6 year require that you already have that license in New York state.
So you're only practicing in the hospital because you're already licensed our programs don't practice in hospitals only within the University itself right so because you're working under faculty that allows you to see patients alright so it's through their license. You're basically that you're able to see patients and the question mentions Didia. If you do a DDS from NYU if you do get Lee DDS degree that will allow you to practice with some other requirements.
In uh throughout the United States that is the best way to get a broad license in the US.
Alright so um we're going to wrap it up. It's been 1 full hour. An I'm going to put on our screen. Our contact information in case something still unclear. We're definitely available to talk to a few question comes to you right after you exit out. Please give us a call send us an email where definitely available to help you with any questions that come up now or throughout the application process or once you're admitted and you're coming to New York.
